Rocky, apparently the sole reason most NJRCers have signed up here is to follow your Speedster rebuild. So...how's the Speedster rebuild coming along? I read of some progress in the February 2010 Kit Car Builder courtesy of our friend Max. Now it's your turn!

Ah the pen (or keyboard in this case) is truly mightier than the sword. Although I'm shocked to see that Max would so quickly turn to his position of power and fame as a syndicated columnist to threaten a fellow NJRCer in such a manner. Yes, shocked and appalled. Or is that a "Paul-ed"? You must redirect this deep seated anger my friend Max. I suggest slamming a door or two.

it guys! I have no excuses as to why the Speedster still sits in the garage stripped of all its amenities, waiting for me to take the next step. I walk out into the garage no less than 3 or 4 times a day. I hear voices calling to me “When are you going to finish me? Carlisle is just around the corner!” Oh, I just realize it’s just Alan’s voice in my head nagging me as he does every day. There she sits with the back end jacked up in the air just as I left it after repacking and installing new CV joints and axels. As I began to torque the CV bolts I discovered my torque wrench broke. Took it back to Sears but of course it wasn’t covered lifetime. “Go to the parts counter and order a rebuild kit” the salesman told me. Parts guy said "they don’t make repair parts to fix the problem" my wrench had, "and if they did I’d have to send it for recalibration and the bottom line better to buy a new one." The more I did to this car the more I found things that needed to fixed, repaired or replaced. Very disheartening! I forgot how many trips I made to the hardware store or auto parts store when I was building it the first time. I have done some body work filling the horn grills and other holes. Ok now it's ready (well close) to take to the paint shop! Only one more thing to do. Woops, there’s always seems to be one more thing I found that has to be done first.

This is the crack that started it all. (Insert your own wise remarks about cracks.) When I finished poking 'the crack' with a screwdriver,(insert your remarks again.) it ended up about 6 inches long, not repairable, not even using "plumbers crack putty". Attachments:

Welcome back Rocky! Since you asked, twice, for comments, far be it from me to disaapoint. So let me pick out the highlights! Stripped of all amenities, she sits in the garage with her back end jacked up in the air. Waiting for me to take the next step, she calls out, "When are you going to finish me?" I begin to torque, but break my "wrench". So I poke the the crack with my "screwdriver" and it ends up six inches long. It feels like my first time. And now it's not repairable. Did I get it?

I know we're joking about it. But that crack should be a warning to all of us running VW based kit cars. It wouldn't hurt to get under 'em on a regular basis and look for signs of corrosion.
